Yoga Teacher Training Policy

Living the Yogic Discipline at Samyak Yoga, Mysore

At Samyak Yoga, discipline is not a restriction, but it is devotion in motion.
These guidelines protect the rhythm of the gurukula so that every student arrives prepared, aligned, and ready to learn.
Please read this policy carefully before registering for your course.

1. The Spirit of the Shala

Respect for the space is respect for your own practice.

The shala is a sacred learning space: a living classroom where teaching, silence, and breath converge. When you enter, leave the world outside. Arrive on time, move quietly, and maintain the serenity of the environment.

2. Presence & Participation (Attendance and Certification)

Presence is more powerful than perfection. Consistency is where the magic is.
  • Every class, whether asana, pranayama, or philosophy, is essential to your growth as a Yoga Teacher.

  • If a student misses more than three sessions, for any reason (including illness, psychological or emotional challenges, or personal circumstances that feel important), the training is considered incomplete.

  • In such cases, the student will receive a Certificate of Participation instead of a Teacher Training Certification.

  • This need not be discussed before Deekshānta (the final ceremony).

  • You may return during the annual Completion Week, held every September (last two weeks) — to complete the missed portions, pay the nominal fee and receive full certification.

3. Health & Readiness

Observation is also participation; even stillness can be part of learning.
  • Samyak Yoga Teacher Trainings are intensive in body, mind, and schedule.

  • Please ensure you are physically and mentally ready to participate before registering.

  • If you feel unwell during the course, you are encouraged to attend and observe the class silently.

  • Observation is also participation; even stillness can be part of learning.

4. Phones, Devices, and Recording (Mindful Use)

Technology is a servant of awareness,  never a substitute for it.

We welcome mindful use of technology as part of learning. You may take photos, videos, or record classes when needed, provided it does not disturb others.
To maintain focus and sanctity of the space, please follow these principles:

  • Keep all devices on flight mode inside the shala.

  • When not in use, place them in the designated area and retrieve them only when necessary.

  • Do not use phones for calls, messages, or notifications during sessions.

  • Laptops, tablets, or other electronic devices are not permitted for note-taking. All notes should be handwritten to preserve attention and respect for tradition.

  • Teachers may ask to pause or stop recordings at any time to protect privacy or focus.

5. During Class (Start to Finish)

Discipline in small actions cultivates mastery in larger ones.
  • Each session is a complete journey. Once class begins, please remain in the shala until it concludes.

  • Leaving mid-session (including for washroom breaks) is not permitted, except for genuine medical emergencies.

  • Short breaks are provided between classes for personal needs.

6. Shala Etiquette (Cleanliness & Quiet)

Respect for the space is respect for the Self
  • Enter the shala with clean feet, calm breath, and minimal conversation.

  • Keep your mat and surroundings tidy. Avoid strong perfumes or oils that can distract others.

  • Respect the collective silence: every sound in the shala carries energy.

  • If photography or filming is permitted, ensure it does not interrupt others’ concentration.

7. Lifestyle & Conduct (Ashram Rhythm)

In simplicity, the mind becomes still enough to see truth
  • The training follows ashram-style living: simple, sattvic, and disciplined.
Simplicity is not deprivation; it is the foundation for clarity.

  • Refrain from alcohol, smoking, or any intoxicants during the training.

  • Intimate relationships between students or with staff are not permitted during the course.

  • Avoid outside food, loud music, or late-night socialising, as they disrupt the sattvic rhythm.

  • Use common areas for discussions; private rooms are meant for rest and quiet reflection.

8. Personal Responsibility (Integrity Clause)

Discipline without humility becomes rigidity; humility without discipline becomes drift
  • Your teachers are here to guide, but your discipline is your own responsibility.

You are accountable for your attitude, energy, and participation.

  • If any behaviour or conduct disrupts the collective practice or the ashram environment, the teaching team reserves the right to ask the student to discontinue without refund.

9. Understanding the Spirit of These Policies

What begins with guidance finds fulfillment through discipline

These guidelines are not meant to limit, but to liberate.

Freedom in Yoga arises not from doing what we please, but from mastering what we choose. When you honour these principles, they cease to be rules; they become Yoga in action.
