General outline of Yoga Teacher Training Course
Early Morning Practice
There will be a traditional Yoga Practice in the morning session. If you are attending the Ashtanga Yoga Teacher Training, the morning practice focuses on the Primary Series of Ashtanga Yoga while in Hatha Yoga Teacher Training the Traditional Hatha Yoga Sequences are practiced to explore the traditional Yoga Practice of a particular style of Yoga.
Sanskrit names of Asanas
The Sanskrit names of the postures are explained elaborately and how to teach a Led class effectively is evaluated in detail. As we all have experienced, Adhomukha Shavasana is popularly known as Downward Dog, but you won’t get the same experience as that in the Sanskrit name. Hence, for every Yoga Practitioner, it is very important to know the Sanskrit names of the postures. We make an effort every day to chant the names in Sanskrit and by the third week of the Teacher Training, students will be quiet good in pronouncing the names in Sanskrit.
To practice a particular pose into its deep, one needs to know intelligent way of using the muscles, the appropriate way of breathing, meditative state of the mind and spiritually rooted soul. The practice of postures is a moving meditation. In the session “Teaching Methodology” or “Asana Clinic” we try to explore the concepts on which a particular posture is developed, how can it be practiced at a deeper level, the benefits, and contra-indications. We also discuss the usage of props, the balance between the strength and flexibility and so on.
Alignments of Every Asana
Beauty and perfection of every Asana depend upon two factors; one being the flexibility and the other is the alignment of different body parts involved in the posture. Flexibility can be achieved with regular practice and for understanding the posture one would need a good understanding of the posture and fine tune the subtle movements required to land in a perfect position.
As a teacher, it is most important to know the integral aspects of Yoga postures, its limitations, and benefits which in turn will help notice the common mistakes in a posture performed by a student and accordingly make the subtle changes required.
Art of Hands on Adjustments
Art of Adjustments is one of the significant fields where Yoga teacher has to work constantly to grow and to keep his/her class unique. Hence we try to explore it with every detail. The importance of encouraging students to continue with a regular practice and preparing them for Mysore style is emphasized.
Yoga Class Sequencing
Yoga Class Sequencing is one of the significant tools that a Yoga Teacher Training Trainee wishes to take back from the course. During the training, you will be given different modules, the structure of creating yoga class sequences and guided to create creative class sequences using forward folds, backbends, balancing, twisting etc in effective ways.
You will be asked to design a yoga class module based on what you have been practicing under the guidance of a teacher. By practicing the class modules, you will be able to teach your class back home effectively with creativity catering the needs of different types of people coming to your classes.
Making of a Yoga Teacher
To develop the teaching skills we have sessions named ‘Group class’ which is one of the inevitable parts of the training. Starting from day 2, you will be leading a practical class for a group of fellow participants every day based on the Asanas learned by you in the evening. This builds the confidence, tones up the teaching skills and other required criteria to be a teacher. This class will always be supervised by one of the main teachers and there will be a feedback session after every group class session to improve the quality of the participant’s teaching.
After building the confidence, skills and other required criteria, you will be taking a class for the whole group in the last week. This prepares you to get ready to teach once you go back.
Teach Yoga to learn Yoga
We will have an introduction to Yoga anatomy, in which we will discuss the anatomical aspects of Yoga practice through the perspective of Yogic wisdom. Yoga Anatomy does not end at the muscles, intuitive breathing and bones, Yogic wisdom has an integrative approach towards the human system. These insights are discussed and a whole new perspective on human body based on yogic wisdom is discovered in Yoga Anatomy sessions.
Sessions on Yoga Philosophy including The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, Vedic chanting with their meaning, Chakras and their psychological influence, the philosophy behind the practice of Bandhas and Mudras etc. are discussed in detail besides the sessions on Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga of Yoga Kuranta in Ashtanga Training and Hatha Yoga Pradeepika in Hatha Yoga Training.
The primary focus of these sessions is to bring Yoga as a Yogic Lifestyle and the practical techniques to take Yoga beyond the mat.
